FAMILY SPIRIT

FROM WINE TO WHISKY

Every passion has a beginning, and sometimes it arises in the most unexpected places.

For Gerhard Kreutz, the journey that led him to whisky began long before Genuss am Gaumen became a go-to destination for enthusiasts in Vorarlberg. Originally a great wine lover, Gerhard discovered the world of whisky during a trip to Scotland in 2004. His visit to his first distillery proved to be a defining moment, opening the doors to a world that would become much more than just a personal interest.

In 2010, Gerhard opened Genuss am Gaumen together with his family. Initially, the shop offered a selection of about thirty single malts, alongside its wine assortment. Today, the whisky selection has grown considerably and includes over 600 different single malts.

Even the name says something about the business’s philosophy. Inspired by traditional Greisslereien, (small shops where you could find a little bit of everything) Gerhard wanted an original name that would capture the variety of products and pleasures brought together under one roof.

A PHILOSOPHY ROOTED IN QUALITY AND HUMAN CONNECTIONS

One of the most interesting aspects of Genuss am Gaumen is how the whiskies are selected.

For Gerhard and his daughter, Alexandra, the appearance of the bottle or the age stated on the label aren’t the most important factors. Quality comes first, along with the character of the spirit and the relationships built with the people behind each product.

Independent bottlers play a prominent role in their selection. Names like Mark Watt, Dràm Mòr, Blackadder, and Claxton’s represent the kind of discoveries that make exploring the world of whisky so exciting.

The goal is to offer unique bottles that aren’t necessarily available everywhere. The selection also includes special editions bottled exclusively for Genuss am Gaumen, another distinctive feature of the business.

It’s a philosophy that focuses on what’s in the glass, without forgetting that the people and stories behind a whisky can make the experience even more meaningful.

NOT JUST WHISKY: A WHOKLE WORLD TO DISCOVER

Despite its strong identity rooted in whisky, Genuss am Gaumen offers much more.

You’ll find Italian culinary specialties and appetizers, rum, liqueurs, gin, and other house-made spirits, Austrian chocolate, wines, and even a beer brewed in collaboration with a brewery near Salzburg.

This variety reflects the business’s original vision: to bring together different products and pleasures under one roof.

But Gerhard’s story also has another dimension, one that takes us from curating bottles to producing his own spirits.

FROM ENTHUSIAST TO PRODUCER

In 2015, driven by curiosity and a desire to experiment firsthand, Gerhard began producing his own spirits. Learning the craft was no easy task. There was no ready-made formula to follow, and his first attempts required patience. A great deal of patience.

Over time, however, experimentation gave way to experience, and distillation became another important part of his journey in the world of whisky.

Among the projects tied to this story is Krinnawible. The name is inspired by a legendary figure associated with the town of Koblach. According to tradition, this mysterious presence used to frighten passing hikers. Since Gerhard’s warehouse is located right below the so-called Krinna-Stiege, the choice of name was almost natural.

It’s a story that blends local folklore, experimentation, and the kind of creativity that can emerge when people with diverse backgrounds come together around the world of whisky.

By the way: one of Gerhard’s whiskies, Krinnawible “Bhean Uasal,” was named Whiskey of the Year at the 2026 Meininger’s International Spirits Award (ISW).

A PASSION TO SHARE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION

Since 2013, Alexandra has been working alongside her father in the family business. Today, she is an integral part of Genuss am Gaumen, helping to select whiskies and contributing to the store’s future development.

During our conversation, it became clear that this is not merely a business destined to be passed down from one generation to the next. It’s a passion that father and daughter can experience together. Whether traveling to Scotland, attending tastings, or simply sitting down at the table to share a dram.

Alexandra describes how wonderful it is to share the same interests as her father. These are precious moments, especially when daily life leaves little room to pause and enjoy time together.

Their story reminds us that a passion can take on an even deeper meaning when it becomes something to share.

WHERE WHISKY BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

Genuss am Gaumen’s activities aren’t limited to the store in Götzis. The Kreutz family organizes tastings and themed evenings and regularly participates in Austria’s major whisky fairs and events.

These are opportunities to discover interesting bottles, meet other enthusiasts, and share experiences with people driven by the same curiosity.

It was during one of these events that I met the Gerhard and his family. Visiting the shop gave me the chance to hear their story and, in turn, get to know them better.

When I asked him what his fondest memory related to whisky was, his mind went back to his first visit to a Scottish distillery: Benromach. Many other unforgettable moments have come since then, but that first encounter has remained special.

Gerhard also spoke of the pleasure of sitting down with friends, talking about Scotland, and sharing a glass of whisky. For him, a glass of whisky has the power to bring people from very different backgrounds and life paths together on equal footing.

It’s a thought that has stayed with me.

Because for us enthusiasts, whisky isn’t just about distilleries, aging, barrels, and tasting notes. It’s also about the people we meet, the cherished memories, and the stories we share along the way.

And, as Gerhard and Alexandra’s story shows, it can also be a family passion destined to grow and be renewed from generation to generation.

A huge thank you to Gerhard, Alexandra, and Alexandra for their hospitality and the unforgettable day.

And, of course, a thank you to you, dear reader.
