HIGHLAND PARK - THE SPIRIT OF THE ORKNEYS
At this year’s FAFGA in Innsbruck, the Claymore Whisky Club once again set up a whisky lounge dedicated to enthusiasts and simply the curious ones. Among the event’s guests was Markus Braun, brand ambassador for Highland Park, who led a tasting that took us on a journey to discover the Orkney distillery and the characteristics that make its single malts so distinctive.
markus braun and the highland park philosophy
Markus Braun is a brand ambassador for the Edrington Group, which also includes Macallan and Glenrothes, and has been involved in education and outreach in the world of spirits for years. During his presentation, he guided participants through the history of Highland Park, its production techniques, and the fundamental role of casks in shaping the whisky’s flavor profile.
The central theme of the evening was encapsulated in the phrase “Different by Nature,” linked to the distillery’s new identity and its place of origin: The Orkney Islands, an archipelago off the northern coast of Scotland, are in fact an essential element in understanding the character of these whiskies.
One of the most interesting aspects concerns the local peat, rich in heather. Its use helps develop a delicate smoky profile, with floral nuances and a distinctive sweetness, a character distinct from the more intense and assertive profile associated with other famous peated Scotch whiskies.
6 whiskies, 6 interpretations
The tasting journey featured six Highland Park expressions, offering an overview of different styles and approaches:
12 years old
The starting point of the evening. This classic expression introduced the distillery’s character, with its delicate smoky note and the influence of the various types of casks used for maturation.
15 years old
With the move to the 15-year-old, the focus shifted more toward first-fill casks, which impart a more pronounced influence on the spirit. It was an opportunity to understand how the selection of wood helps shape the whisky’s aromatic profile.
17 years old - between you and i
One of the evening’s most unique offerings. This version of the “Between You and I” series, previewed during the event, was characterized by the exclusive use of American oak barrels. The tasting was accompanied by a specific invitation: to freely explore aromas and sensations, without being influenced by pre-established official notes.
A fun fact: the bottle design was created in collaboration with artist Laila Gohar.
dark origins
An expression from the previous range, also notable for its connection to the brand’s historic visual identity, characterized by dark tones and references to Viking tradition. Its profile emphasizes greater intensity and richness, with first-fill ex-sherry casks playing a key role.
Personally, I consider it one of Highland Park’s finest expressions.
austria edition - single cask
A selection dedicated to the Austrian market, sourced from a single cask. This edition allowed us to delve deeper into the theme of single-cask bottlings and cask-strength whisky, which remains closer to the distillate’s original characteristics before alcohol reduction.
heather
The tasting concluded with an expression particularly significant to the evening’s theme. Presented as a cask-strength whisky called “Heather,” it is made entirely from malt peated with heather peat. This choice highlights one of Highland Park’s most distinctive elements and its connection to the Orkney landscape.
conclusions
Beyond the individual bottles, the value of a tasting like this endures. It’s an invitation to explore whisky with curiosity, listening to the explanations of those who produce and live it, while always leaving room for your own impressions.

Sei whisky, sei interpretazioni
12 Year Old
15 Year Old
17 Year Old - Between You and I
Austria Edition - Single Cask

12 Year Old
15 Year Old
17 Year Old – Between You and I
Austria Edition – Single Cask
