noctis domini 2025

Ferrara is a city with a special aura. Walking through its squares and along its ancient streets, you get the feeling that history and imagination have always coexisted here. It is therefore no surprise that one of Italy's most fascinating Gothic & Steampunk festivals takes place here: Noctis Domini.

Under the rule of the House of d'Este, Ferrara became one of the most important cultural centers of the Italian Renaissance. Even today, its historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) retains that solemn elegance, suspended in time. It is precisely this setting that makes Noctis Domini such a special event: a festival where Gothic aesthetics, steampunk creativity, and dark art blend perfectly with the atmosphere of the city. Every year in Atumn, Ferrara comes alive with enthusiasts, artists, artisans, and curious visitors from all over Italy. The result is a vibrant, theatrical, and romantic celebration.

The festival is organized by the cultural association Ombre d'Arte, led by Roberta, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing. Listening to her talk about how this passion for “dark art” came about allows you to understand how much heart goes into this event. The whole thing is supported by the patronage of the Municipality of Ferrara, a sign of the strong bond between the city and its community.

During the day, Piazza Trento e Trieste is transformed into a veritable fair of the imagination. There are stalls of artisans and artists, books, drinks, music, and traveling shows. It is the perfect place to meet like-minded people, exchange ideas, and be inspired. I myself was behind a stall, in the company of Belva Bones and her creations. It was an experience that allowed me to see the festival from the inside, through the eyes of those who are actively involved in it.

As darkness falls, the square fills up even more. Everyone waits for the Corteo dei Signori della Notte (Procession of the Lords of the Night), the beating heart of the event. Like a dark river coming to life, creatures of the night parade through the streets. The effect is magnetic, a true living work of art. For a few minutes, the city seems like a world suspended between dream and nightmare, between past and imagination.

My experience ended the following evening, far from the noise of the party. Sitting on the roof of a building in the historic center, I watched the sun disappear behind the rooftops of Ferrara, sipping a last drop of whisky.

And after all, let's not forget that it was precisely in that era of shadows and inventions that many of the whisky distilleries were born that still fill the glasses of us dreamers today: a subtle link between past and present, like a toast that crosses time.

A warm thank you to Roberta and all the noble souls at Noctis.

And, of course, thank you, dear reader.

See you soon and be well.
