When a new distillery releases a limited edition, it’s easy to focus on the numbers: alcohol by volume, age, type of casks, and level of peating.
In the case of the Ardnahoe Chairman's Selection, however, the story is different.
This new release, launched on June 18, was created according to the personal specifications of Stewart Laing, founder of Ardnahoe and a legendary figure in the Scotch whisky industry. After more than sixty years in the sector, Laing passed away in early 2026, leaving behind not only a well-established distillery, but also a very clear vision of what Ardnahoe was meant to represent.
The Chairman’s Selection stems precisely from that vision.
According to the distillery, this is the peatiest whisky ever released by Ardnahoe, and it is offered at natural proof, without artificial colorings and without chill filtration.
It was matured in first-fill ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon casks for six years.
On paper, it seems like a whisky with promising character and personality: notes of cocoa and saltiness on the nose, honeyed malt and stewed plums on the palate, with peaty smoke serving as a common thread from start to finish.
But the most interesting aspect isn’t necessarily what’s in the glass.
Each package, in fact, contains a personal letter written by Stewart Laing himself. This detail transforms this release from a simple limited edition into something more meaningful for those who have followed the distillery’s history since its very beginnings.
Ardnahoe is still a very young distillery. Production began in 2018, and the first official single malt, the Inaugural Release, didn’t arrive until 2024 - and of course, we dedicated a video to it on our channel. In just a few years, however, the distillery has carved out an important place among enthusiasts thanks to a style that combines peat, fruity notes, and a notable oily quality, enhanced by the use of traditional worm tubs - a rarity on the island of Islay.
For this reason, the Chairman’s Selection may be remembered as one of the most important bottles from the distillery’s early years.
Not only because it is the peatiest whisky Ardnahoe has produced to date, but because it bears the final signature of the man who envisioned, built, and brought the distillery to life.

Quando una nuova distilleria rilascia un'edizione limitata, è facile concentrarsi sui numeri: gradazione, età, tipologia di botti e livello di torbatura.
Nel caso dell'Ardnahoe Chairman's Selection, però, la storia è diversa.
Questa nuova release, uscita il 18 giugno, è stata creata seguendo le specifiche personali di Stewart Laing, fondatore di Ardnahoe e figura storica del whisky scozzese. Dopo oltre sessant'anni trascorsi nel settore, Laing è venuto a mancare all'inizio del 2026, lasciando dietro di sé non soltanto una distilleria ormai affermata, ma anche una visione ben precisa di ciò che Ardnahoe avrebbe dovuto rappresentare.
Il Chairman's Selection nasce proprio da quella visione.
Secondo la distilleria, si tratta del whisky più torbato mai rilasciato da Ardnahoe e viene proposto a gradazione naturale, senza coloranti artificiali e senza filtrazione a freddo.
La maturazione è avvenuta in botti ex-Sherry ed ex-Bourbon di primo riempimento per sei anni.
Sulla carta, sembra un whisky dal carattere e dalla personalità promettenti: note di cacao e salsedine al naso, malto mielato e prugne cotte al palato, con il fumo di torba a fare da filo conduttore dall'inizio alla fine.
Ma l'aspetto più interessante non è necessariamente ciò che si trova nel bicchiere.
Ogni confezione contiene infatti una lettera personale scritta da Stewart Laing stesso. Un dettaglio che trasforma questa release da semplice edizione limitata a qualcosa di più significativo per chi segue la storia della distilleria fin dai suoi primi passi.
Ardnahoe è ancora una realtà molto giovane. La produzione è iniziata nel 2018 e il primo single malt ufficiale, l'Inaugural Release, è arrivato soltanto nel 2024 e naturalmente gli abbiamo dedicato un video sul canale. In pochi anni la distilleria si è però ritagliata uno spazio importante tra gli appassionati grazie a uno stile che combina torba, note fruttate e una notevole componente oleosa, favorita dall'utilizzo dei tradizionali worm tubs, una rarità sull'isola di Islay.
Per questo motivo il Chairman's Selection potrebbe essere ricordato come una delle bottiglie più importanti della prima fase di vita della distilleria.
Non soltanto perché rappresenta il whisky più torbato prodotto finora da Ardnahoe, ma perché racchiude l'ultima firma di chi quella distilleria l'ha immaginata, costruita e portata alla luce.

Wenn eine neue Destillerie eine limitierte Auflage auf den Markt bringt, konzentriert man sich leicht auf die Zahlen: Alkoholgehalt, Alter, Fassart und Torfgehalt.
Im Fall der Ardnahoe Chairman’s Selection sieht die Sache jedoch anders aus.
Diese neue Abfüllung, die am 18. Juni auf den Markt kam, wurde nach den persönlichen Vorgaben von Stewart Laing kreiert, dem Gründer von Ardnahoe und einer historischen Persönlichkeit der schottischen Whisky-Szene. Nach über sechzig Jahren in der Branche verstarb Laing Anfang 2026 und hinterließ nicht nur eine mittlerweile etablierte Brennerei, sondern auch eine ganz konkrete Vision davon, wofür Ardnahoe stehen sollte.
Die „Chairman’s Selection“ entspringt genau dieser Vision.
Nach Angaben der Brennerei handelt es sich um den torfigsten Whisky, den Ardnahoe je auf den Markt gebracht hat. Er wird mit natürlichem Alkoholgehalt, ohne künstliche Farbstoffe und ohne Kaltfiltration angeboten.
Die Reifung erfolgte sechs Jahre lang in erstbefüllten Ex-Sherry- und Ex-Bourbon-Fässern.
Auf dem Papier scheint es ein Whisky mit vielversprechendem Charakter und Persönlichkeit zu sein: Noten von Kakao und Meeresbrise in der Nase, honigartiges Malz und gekochte Pflaumen am Gaumen, wobei der Torfrauch von Anfang bis Ende den roten Faden bildet.
Doch das Interessanteste ist nicht unbedingt das, was sich im Glas befindet.
Jede Verpackung enthält nämlich einen persönlichen Brief, der von Stewart Laing selbst verfasst wurde. Ein Detail, das diese Veröffentlichung von einer einfachen limitierten Auflage zu etwas Bedeutenderem für diejenigen macht, die die Geschichte der Brennerei seit ihren Anfängen verfolgen.
Ardnahoe ist noch eine sehr junge Brennerei. Die Produktion begann 2018, und der erste offizielle Single Malt, der „Inaugural Release“, kam erst 2024 auf den Markt – natürlich haben wir ihm ein Video auf unserem Kanal gewidmet. In nur wenigen Jahren hat sich die Brennerei jedoch dank eines Stils, der Torf, fruchtige Noten und eine bemerkenswerte ölige Komponente vereint – begünstigt durch den Einsatz traditioneller Worm Tubs, einer Seltenheit auf der Insel Islay –, einen wichtigen Platz unter den Liebhabern erobert.
Aus diesem Grund könnte die „Chairman’s Selection“ als eine der bedeutendsten Abfüllungen aus der Anfangsphase der Destillerie in Erinnerung bleiben.
Nicht nur, weil sie den bisher torfigsten Whisky von Ardnahoe darstellt, sondern auch, weil sie die letzte Handschrift dessen in sich trägt, der diese Destillerie erdacht, erbaut und zum Leben erweckt hat.
