benromach - exclusive tasting

Some tastings are true journeys into a distillery’s philosophy. The evening dedicated to Benromach was one of them.

The event’s special guest was Patrick James, the distillery’s Brand Ambassador, who guided us through the history, identity, and vision of a Scottish distillery that has remained true to craftsmanship in an era dominated by mass production.

The event took place live at the Claymore Whisky Club in Innsbruck, in an intimate and passionate atmosphere, perfect for listening to tales of ancient warehouses, legendary casks, and unconventional production choices.

an independent distillery with an ancient soul

Benromach was founded in the Speyside region, a land of elegant and fruity whiskies. Yet its identity takes a different direction: reviving a traditional, slightly peated style, atypical for the region.

Behind this choice lies the vision of Gordon & MacPhail, a historic independent bottler that, after over a century of experience in selecting and maturing spirits, has fulfilled the dream of owning its own distillery.

The goal is not to chase trends, but to produce authentic whiskies.

Handcrafted production. Human oversight. Sensory decisions.

Here, the concept of “handmade” is a method, not a marketing ploy.

the wood makes the whisky

One phrase echoed throughout the tasting:

“The wood makes the whisky.”

Maturation is at the heart of the Benromach style. First Fill as the rule, not the exception. Each cask is chosen to build character, structure, and balance.

Bourbon for elegance and vanilla. Oloroso Sherry for depth and dark fruit. And time, to harmonize it all.

the tasting line-up

Benromach 10 Years Old

The entry point to the distillery’s style. A balance of sweetness, fruit, and a delicate hint of peat. Matured separately in first-fill Bourbon and Sherry casks, then blended. Classic, elegant, and always available. Thankfully.

Benromach 15 Years Old

Same recipe as the 10-year-old, with five more years of maturation. Time amplifies the Sherry, rounds out the edges, and makes the palate deeper and velvety. A concrete demonstration of how maturation transforms a spirit.

Benromach 21 Years Old

Refinement and balance. Predominantly Bourbon with a more subtle Sherry component to preserve the original character. Smooth, complex, contemplative. The classic end-of-day dram.

the contrast range: experimenting without losing identity

A line created to explore different paths while maintaining the Benromach DNA. Limited editions, a creative approach, the same production rigor.

Unpeated

Zero peat, aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks. Aromatic purity and a focus on the spirit itself. An alternative take on the house’s character.

High Enzyme

Long fermentations and high enzyme content. The result: a fruity, tropical profile with spicy notes and a lively structure. A technique that becomes a sensory personality.

Peat Smoke

The most intensely peated version in the range. Bold smoke balanced by an enveloping sweetness. Controlled power, never extreme.

cask strength: when character speaks loud

Tasting concludes with a full-strength expression.

Cask Strength Vintage 2014 Batch 2

High alcohol content perfectly integrated. Intensity, body, and aromatic depth. Smoke and sweetness in perfect harmony. A whisky that makes no compromises.

conclusions

Tastings like this remind us why it’s worth looking beyond the label and listening to the stories of those who actually make the whisky. Greater awareness in the glass also means greater pleasure in the tasting.

Benromach confirms that tradition and identity can coexist with experimentation and innovation, without losing consistency.

If you love single malts with personality, bottled without shortcuts, this is a distillery to keep an eye on.

A special thanks to Patrick James and all our friends at the Claymore Whisky Club for an unforgettable evening. And of course, to you, dear reader.

Slàinte.
