the mysterious break-in at the liquor store

It happened during the night between November 28 and 29, in Ashland, Virginia. A closed liquor store, silent, seemingly secure. No alarms went off, no doors were forced open. Yet, in the morning, something had clearly gone wrong.

The shelves were no longer in order. The environment bore the signs of an unwanted presence, but without the brutality typical of a robbery. Just a curious, almost thoughtful mess.

For a few hours, the case remained suspended in that gray area so beloved of the news: nighttime intrusions, unclear motives, unusual dynamics. Nothing of value is missing, which makes the matter even stranger. Who enters a liquor store and ignores the money?

Then the camera footage arrives, and the mystery takes on a different tone. It is not an experienced thief, nor a customer after hours.

Oh yes. It's a raccoon. The protagonist of an unauthorized tasting, which ended (with a certain dignity) in the store's bathroom, where it was found unconscious the following morning. Judging by the bottles of Scotch lying on the floor, the little intruder seems to have rather selective tastes. But on this point, to be fair, we'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Animal protection officers recovered him, secured him, and released him without consequences.

End of the investigation, end of the mystery, end of any attempt at dramatization. Only one observation remains, inevitably ironic: sometimes we construct great investigative narratives, when reality is simply doing what it does best.

Surprising us. And making fun of us a little.
